How Far Can A Deer Smell?

February 7, 2022 by TheSage

deer can smell far thanks to their nose

Are you wondering how far can a deer smell?

Any seasoned hunter will tell you, scent control is critical.

But many hunters still don’t take the extra effort required to mask their scent.

Even hunters that do can be doomed due to a sudden shift in wind.

As we will discuss below, deer have a much better sense of smell than humans.

This knowledge can be the difference between a successful hunt and going home empty handed.

How Far Can a Deer Smell?

The jury is still out on a exact distance, but consensus is that deer can smell somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 mile depending on the scent and wind.

Humidity can play a role as well, with more humid climates making it easier for deer to smell.

Researches have been trying to answer this question for quite some time.

What they have found is that a deer’s sense of smell is similar to that of a dog’s…

Which is somewhere between 500-1000 times better than us humans.

deer can smell 500-1000x better than humans

How Does Deer’s Smell Compare to Other Animals

While there haven’t been any specific studies to compare and measure how far every animal can smell, we can take some educated guesses based on relative comparisons.

Bear are believed to have the best sense of smell of any animal on earth.

It is over 2000 times better than a human’s.

Other animals like like dogs, pigs, and deer all have significantly better sense of smell than humans.

Deer Smelling Superpowers

Deer have approximately 300 million olfactory receptors compared to humans who have only 5 million.

The practical implications while deer hunting are important.

1/4 mile is 1320 feet, or 440 yards.

This is a long shot for a rifle, and an impossible shot with a bow.

Add in even a light breeze and your hunt might be doomed.

So what do we do as hunters knowing that deer can sniff us out from such a far distance?

What Do Deer Smell on Humans?

Because deer rely heavily on their sense of smell to detect potential threats, they are great at identifying scents put off by humans.

The list of specific smells deer smell on humans is longer than can be listed here but some of the most common are:

  • Body Odor/Sweat
  • Deodorants
  • Food
  • Unnatural Chemicals
  • Scent from Pets

How to Prevent Deer from Smelling You

Luckily, as deer hunters, not all hope is lost.

There are a number of different strategies you can use to help prevent you from getting scented.

Being mindful of scent control, wind, and keeping your gear clean can all help reduce our chances of a deer smelling you.

Research on Deer’s Sense of Smell

Deer are able to detect human odor we emit through skin that evaporate and are called volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Dr. Bronson Stickland of Mississippi State University has studied this in depth.

In this study, researchers tested clothing that had been tested with a scent blocker vs. those that hadn’t.

They found that the sprays work by reducing levels of 29 key compounds found in human scent.

Hence your scent matters, and scent blockers do work.

Best Scent Blockers

A complete review of the best deer scent blockers warrants its own article, but here is my favorite at the moment.

Using it is a simple as spraying your hunting clothing and gear prior to your hunt.

With a thorough coating of spray, you should be good to go for a few days of hunting.

Just be sure to re-spray your gear if you wash it.

Wind Control

Wind scent drift is nothing new to hunters.

always pay attention to wind direction while deer hunting

Hunters have been using techniques to use the wind in their favor for ages.

But it is worth reiterating here.

If at all possible, you want to make sure to have the wind blowing into your face.

When the wind direction is coming from behind you, the chances of a deer in front of you picking up your scent increase dramatically.

Ozonics

The usefulness of ozonics are still up for debate among hunters.

I did a breakdown of my 5 favorite Ozone generators for hunters in another article.

As we discussed above, the need to mask our scent as hunters is real. There is no getting around that.

I believe anything we can do to improve our chances is worth it if it is within your budget.

Using Deer Sense of Smell to Our Advantage

Another way to look at the excellent smelling abilities of deer is to see if we can use it to our benefit.

Apples, corn, and other types of attractants can be used to attract deer into the area you hunt.

Frequently Asked Questions about Deer Smell

What is a Deer’s Best Sense?

While deer have remarkable abilities to see, smell, and hear, their sense of hearing is the best.

Their large ears have the ability to move and are highly tuned to detect even the most subtle of sounds.

deer have excellent hearing in addition to smell

In fact, deer hear sounds from up to 2 miles away in the right conditions.

But it is important that a hunter considers all three senses.

All three senses work together, are highly developed, and are key to their survival.

How Far Can Deer Smell?

As stated above, a deer can smell somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 mile.

Wind speed and humidity can play a roll as well and make it easier for a deer to detect humans.

How Does Fog Affect Deer’s Smell?

Fog can enhance a deer’s ability to detect scents due to increased moisture, temperature stability, reduced wind turbulence, and ground-level concentration of odors. Hunters need to be extra cautious about their scent presence in such conditions.

Can Deer Smell Water?

Deer seem to have a instinctual ability to locate and navigate towards water supplies.

It turns out their olfactory system is tuned to detect things key to their survival, including the presence of water.

Using the Jacodson’s organ located in their mouth, deer are able to smell water by identifying distinct odors.

Positioning yourself near a watering hole is a tactic that has been used by hunters since the beginning of time.

Does Human Pee Scare Deer?

Many hunters wonder if their own urine will detract deer from coming to an area.

While human urine might have a slight scent, it is usually not enough to scare them away.

If the concentrations of human pee or other odors are high enough, they may start to alert deer of potential threats.

Can Deer Urine Be Used to Attract Deer?

Deer urine is commonly used by hunters to lure in deer. Studies have found rutting buck urine to be the most effective.

Estrus scents are also used to mimic scents put off during different phases of the reproductive cycle deer go through every year.

ruting buck urine can be a great attractant

How Far Can a Buck Smell Doe Urine?

Factors like weather, wind, and how fresh the urine is are going to affect how far a buck can smell doe urine.

Under ideal conditions, the buck will be able to smell the urine from several hundred yards away.

How Far Can Deer Smell Apples?

A deer’s ability to smell apples will depend on the environmental conditions but if conditions are ideal, deer smell food like apples from over 300 yards away.

Apples are a common food source for deer. Their senses are tuned to help them identify potential food sources.

How Far Can Deer Smell Corn?

While corn might not be the best thing to feed deer, there is no denying that they love it.

Corn emits volatile compounds that deer can sense and are attracted to, likely from up to a few hundred yards away.

It is no wonder hunters and land owners have been using corn to attract deer for ages.

Conclusion

So now you know the answer to “how far can deer smell?”

Somewhere between a quarter to half a mile away a deer can smell human body odor.

This highlights the importance of scent control and wind direction.

With tips above, you should be able to increase your odds on your next hunt.
